City News & Business Reporter The Vancouver Sun General news reporter on contract for six months responsible for writing eight-to-15-inch hard news stories, news features, and business stories on a daily basis. Stories ranged from local reaction to world events (Vancouver’s urban search and rescue team in Louisiana, Harry Potter book 6, death of Pope John Paul II, installation of Pope Benedict XVI), local news (2005 provincial election coverage, Mt. Logan rescue), business news (Port of Vancouver strike, 2005 blueberry crop, poultry industry after avian flu), crime stories (pimps recruiting at elementary schools, eagle poaching) and news features (Vancouver Special Olympics gold medal winners). More than 215 stories were published, some having run in other daily papers including the National Post, Victoria Times-Colonist, Edmonton Journal, Kingston Whig-Standard and the Ottawa Citizen. |

TV Reporter Intern CBC Canada Now One of three interns selected for the CBC Canada Now Vancouver Internship Program. Responsibilities included researching and making calls for various news stories, going out with cameraperson to collect interviews, and working with an editor to piece together newsclips. Involved in the CBC Canada Now national coverage of the 2004 Federal Election. Responsibilities included being on the assignment desk routing calls from reporters to show producers, live fact-checking for writers with the election computer, cataloguing election videotape as it came into the newsroom. Special projects I produced included a "Tribute to Valedictorians," a 60-second clip of Valedictorian speeches from Lower Mainland high schools. Producer responsibilities included finding grad ceremony dates and selecting a balanced mix of students from around the Lower Mainland, contacting the school for permission, arranging logistics with concert theatre technical and house staff, directing the camera person on location, writing the script, and working with an editor to put together piece. "Valedictorians 2004" ran for two weeks on CBC Canada Now, and for a week on CBC Radio One. |
